One of the the things I always do is buy two guide books for the places I’m traveling.
Why two? Because it’s amazing how one book will just completely ignore someplace magical.
Case and point, Tivoli, Italy. An easy 45 min train ride from Rome, and I cannot stress how worth it this trip was. It was recommended to us by a friend, and it was in our Fodors guide book, but Rick Steves guidebook completely ignored it. A shame, as it was one of our favorite places we visited in Italy.
There’s two main Villa in Tivoli. Villa de Este and Hadrian’s Villa. My favorite is easily the ruins of the villa built for a lover of Emperor Hadrian, also known in the proper Italian as Villa Adriana.
This picture is from the far end of the Serapeum, viewing back toward the rest of the Villa compound. We only got a very short time in this villa, as internet was spotty and we got bad directions from the visitors services (Tip: be VERY prepared for Tivoli, and don’t rely on your phone), and someday I plan to return with a picnic lunch to just sit and enjoy the beauty.
